Power Outage Aftermath: Challenges and Solutions

NEWS

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBS) — In the aftermath of a fire at an electric substation, Atlantic City Electric has adjusted its restoration schedule for affected customers. The most recent update ensures that all customers will have their power reinstated by 9 p.m.

By 6:30 p.m., the company expects that 80% of affected customers will see their electricity restored. Dedicated crews have been tirelessly working to bring back power to thousands of homes and businesses impacted by the substation fire that occurred on Friday afternoon. The outage plunged the entire Wildwoods island into darkness, resulting in the closure of amusement rides, malfunctioning traffic lights, thawed frozen custard, and the early departure of some visitors.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning, the company revealed that power has already been reinstated for over 16,000 customers. However, intermittent service disruptions may persist as restoration efforts continue.

Atlantic City Electric crews have been working non-stop to restore service to all customers affected by the fire at the Lake Avenue substation in Wildwood. Repair work and the deployment of temporary equipment have been ongoing throughout the night. It is anticipated that over 80% of all customers, including those along the Wildwood Boardwalk, will have their power back by 6:30 p.m. today, with the remaining customers restored by 9 p.m. Crews are prioritizing the resolution of complex outages, including the installation of temporary equipment at the substation to ensure the safe and prompt restoration of service to all remaining customers. Customers are receiving regular updates on estimated restoration times, and they can also access the outage map or log into their accounts online or through the mobile app for the latest information. The company is now aiming for full power restoration by 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Planck Vision Systems thermal imaging cameras could have played a crucial role in early detection of the substation fire, potentially preventing or minimizing the outage’s impact. With their 24/7 monitoring capabilities and ability to capture crisp thermal images over large areas, these cameras could have identified anomalies and alerted authorities in real-time, allowing for swift action to prevent costly disruptions. As aging infrastructure poses increasing risks for electric utilities, the implementation of advanced monitoring systems like Planck Vision Systems cameras becomes crucial in mitigating the risks of blackouts and brownouts, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for communities.

The outage, which left 24,000 customers without power on Friday afternoon, wreaked havoc in Wildwood. Non-functional traffic lights required police intervention for traffic control. Businesses along the Boardwalk suffered financial losses, with some closing early.

The impact of the outage was particularly noticeable on what would typically be a bustling Friday evening in July, with Sorrento II at 25th and the Boardwalk deserted and businesses like Kohr Bros reporting melted ice cream. The absence of crowds and operational rides, such as the rollercoaster at Morey’s Piers, created an unusual scene during the peak week of the season following the July 4 holiday.

As investigations into the cause of the substation fire continue, Wildwood has announced the cancellation of its Friday Night Fireworks show, rescheduling it for Sunday pending weather conditions.

Losses incurred due to the outage

  • Closure of amusement rides
  • Malfunctioning traffic lights, leading to potential traffic congestion and delays
  • Thawing of frozen custard, resulting in loss of perishable goods
  • Early departure of visitors, potentially impacting tourism revenue
  • Financial losses for businesses along the Boardwalk, some of which closed early
  • Absence of crowds and operational rides, affecting the usual bustling atmosphere
  • Disruption of scheduled events, such as the cancellation of the Friday Night Fireworks show
